Frequently Asked Questions

1) Where did the steel come from?
The steel beams are from the World Trade Center. The New York/New Jersey Port Authority is currently holding them.

2) How did you get the steel?
Two firefighters saw that requests for the steel were being solicited by the Port Authority. They worked with Chief Roy Lusk to submit a request for the steel to come to Kitsap County. After receiving that request the Port Authority had to receive approval from a Federal judge and the Families of 9/11 Commission before we were awarded the steel. back to questions

3) What restrictions are put on the use of the steel?

•No monetary gain
•No public funds (city, county, state, federal). This implies that the memorial is dependant upon donations.

5) What was the project done with local schools?
A team from Leadership Kitsap worked with one fifth grade class from each of the five school districts in Kitsap County. Students learned about a variety of heroes from 9/11. Each student painted a tile to represent their beliefs about heroism. The tiles will be incorporated in the memorial. back to questions
